O, your in for a treat. You get to go on the fun and exciting adventure that is apartment hunting (hint hint that was sarcastic). But really, it's a pain, but if you find the right place it was all very well worth effort.
So let's start with basics. Your looking for off campus housing at FIU and the first few places that pop up are 109 TOWER, 4TH STREET COMMONS, and BAYVIEW.

So let's start with basics. Your looking for off campus housing at FIU and the first few places that pop up are 109 TOWER, 4TH STREET COMMONS, and BAYVIEW.
109 TOWER
Located across the street from the Modesto Madique campus. Good news, they just started offering ten month leases, compared to their original 12.
Prices start around $900. For that you get a new apartment shared with 2 to 4 roommates. Each room is a separate lease and therefore is individual i.e. if you want to move out your roommates are fine.
It's got a nice long pool deck to sun bath, a movie theater and a clubhouse.

4th Street Commons
Located about 2 blocks south of 109 tower, 4th street offers the same style of living as 109 Tower. Being built a year or so later the building has some newer and nice features. A more homey type of pool which is located within the pool. More secure elevator system i.e. only residences or those escorted by residences can enter.
Then there's Bayview
Bayview is 109 Tower/ 4th Street commons of Biscayne Bay Campus. It is a new building mnutes from the Biscayne Bay campus. The nice thing about this of course is you look at over the bay. The bad is that the main campus is about n hour away. However, to compensate there is an option get free transport back and forth.
I know what you're thinking
Are these the only options I have available? No!
FIU maintains a website called FIU classifieds where you can view postings for apartments, rooms in homes, etc. These are just the locations and houses that have been posted on our housing board. Note, that you still should be diligent before you enter into a lease. Know what your getting, and for how long.

Where is the nicest place to live?
All the major buildings are newer and have nicer furnishings. No single place can be called the nicest. They all have their own appeal.
Should i Use craigslist?
Sure, you can us.e any sites you want. Just remember that any place you find has the potential of being a scam. Be safe
will i need my full gi bill to pay for housing here?
Not at all. The housing stipend is meant for your housing. But more often than not you should be able to find rental costs significantly less than your housing stipend. That being said, if you choose a place in the affluent areas, like Brickell or on south beach that may not be true
If i live off campus, do i need a car?
Not really, but it is very convenient. Miami is big and its public transportation system isn't the greatest. If you decide to take the bus expect delays.
If i live off campus how bad is traffic?
Miami-dade county is one of the most densely populated counties in the country. So yes, when you drive here expect traffic. That being said this often can attributed to rush hours. Generally 7am-9am and 430pm to 7pm.
should i get a roommate? and if so how do i find one?
That answer is entirely up to you. It is nice to live on your own, but someone to split the rent with is also a pretty good deal. If you are interested in finding a roommate FIU classifieds does maintain a roommate which can help you select your perfect roommate.
