One of the biggest straws of FIU is Study Abroad
FIU maintains partnerships with Universities all around the world. One of the biggest draws for FIU is the international exposure you can receive as a student! It is an excellent experience and one should consider.
CAUTION: There are different types of study abroad. There is Study Abroad and International Student Exchange (more details later). Be sure to know the difference and be sure your GI bill will cover the cost. Remember as an Out of State student you will pay in state tuition as long as you physically reside in Florida. As such, if you leave and don't have a physical residence then you will be charged Out of State Tuition. The GI Bill will only pay tuition for in state. Which means, an instate tuition cost of a single credit is $205.57, and out of state tuition cost is $618.87. They will pay $205.57, and you'll be left with difference of $413.30.
It is a great experience, and by no means are we attempting to scare you away. However, it is important for veterans to understand all aspects of these programs.

What is Study Abroad?
A study abroad is an opportunity for a student to study abroad, these are normally faculty led short term programs. These programs carry with them different costs.
If you are interested in these programs it is a great way to explore new and interesting locations. It is a great way to develop new business contacts and get academic credit. Additionally, often the program fee covers the majority of your fees on a trip like this, housing, travel, food, tours etc.
These are great programs and have many scholarship opportunities

What is an International Student Exchange?
An international student exchange, in the case of a veteran can be a better situation than studying traditionally here at home. Think of an International exchange program (IEP) as trading places with another student. FIU has partnerships with Universities all over the world. In essence the IEP program takes a student from one of these schools and a student from FIU trades with them. You still pay FIU tuition, and get FIU credits but they will take a different form.
For example: In New Zealand the credit system works differently and instead of a 3 academic credit class you would take a 12 point class. Where FIU would then convert this into academic credits here.
The important part to remember is that in terms of the GI bill think locally. If you are taking a class abroad that is 4 credits abroad but 3 credits here, it will in the eyes of the GI bill be a 3 credit class, not 4. This is especially important to be considered a full time student (12 academic credits)
So the IEP you are a student of a different university. You still pay FIU tuition, you still take classes (however, you must also submit them for approval and equivalency through you adviser).

I'm interested in Study Abroad and the IEP, which should I choose and what should I know?
Good question! The IEP program and the Study Abroad program both offer interesting and exciting opportunities. First, take a look at what is offered:

These are great programs, and FIU does do as much as they can to ensure that students can go on these trips. They offer scholarships, and help you get outside of FIU scholarships.
